The Great War, which later became known as World War One, was a truely horrific event. More than eight million people were killed. It was the last war where people volunteered, en masse, to join up. It left a scar on Europe that was to deepen with the Second World War and whose effects are still felt today. The peace agreement signed at Versailles in 1919 led deep divisions in Europe. These would come back to haunt the peacemakers.
