The Great War, which later became known as World War One, was a truely horrific event. More than eight million people were killed. It was the last war where people volunteered, en masse, to join up. It left a scar on Europe that was to deepen with the Second World War and whose effects are still felt today.
This webpage contains resources to help children to understand the causes of World War One.
Cards to cut up to help children to understand the timeline from Neolithic Times to the present day. I used them to explain the meaning of BC, circa, AD and the way BC and AD work in relation to ordering events by dates.
The cards fit together in threes. Each three cards builds a part of the explanation of why Europe went to war in 1914.
